Mitch's Run
Jac's Pack will be here
Mitch spent seven summers as a lifeguard at the Point O’ Woods community on Fire Island. As part
of his workout each day, he would run from the lifeguard stand at Point O’ Woods to the stand at
Sailors Haven and back, a distance of about three miles.

We are inviting everyone to join us on Saturday, July 16th (Rain or Shine) as we walk or run on the
beach from Sailors Haven (Sunken Forest) to Point O’ Woods at 10 AM.

The recommended donation to participate is $25.00, which includes a memorial T-shirt and round-
trip ferry ticket. Sayville Ferries will run a special ferry at 8:00am for us. In addition, there will be
raffles after the run. Please respond by June 30th. If you cannot join us on the beach, but would like
to help the scholarship fund, donations are welcome. All proceeds will be used to fund the scholar-
ship. Should you have any questions, please call 631-589-5089 or visit the web site at http://
www.mitchsrun.com.

Urban Dare New York

Brief Description
Part running - part trivia quiz - part skill challenges - 2 person teams - solve clues to find checkpoints - take team photos at checkpoints - use public transportation - call friends to help solve clues. The race where smarts can beat speed.

Additional Information
It's like a one-day Amazing Race. Get ready for the best challenge you ever took. Take the dare! We will begin check-in at 11:00 and will be taking registration up to the start of the race. Look for us in the light blue t-shirts. You must wear your Urban Dare shirts throughout the race, which we will give you at check-in. You should bring a cell phone and a digital camera to show your pictures at the end of the race. A cell phone camera will work. Maps are also handy and you should have someone to call to help look up clues. I also recommend a pen or pencil to take notes. Once you are out of the starting blocks, you will pick up your clue sheets and be on your way. You can call friends as much as you want for help on clues. For the checkpoints that mention a dare, you must check in with the Urban Dare official, accomplish your task, and get your passport stamped before moving on. On checkpoints that mention a photo, you must get a photo with both team members to show you were both there. This is a team race. You must be together throughout the race. You may walk, run or use public transportation to get to checkpoints. At checkpoints with dares, you must accomplish a task and get your passport stamped to move on to the next checkpoint. Dares range from throwing a bulls-eye, doing a climbing wall, completing a puzzle or eating something (things people like, not bugs). We expect the winners will finish the race in about 2 hours and most of you will finish under 4 hours. We are working to provide a fun-filled day for you, while providing some good challenges.

Entry Fee: $90/team

Montauk is one of the birthplaces of triathlons. The sport is growing and athletes want to challenge themselves with longer events. There are few metro area triathlons of this distance. In addition to providing a venue for the athletes this event will showcase Montauk at a time when the weather is still nice but the summer crowds are not as heavy.

This is a great family weekend to spend on the east end with a beginner triathlete Sprint Race on Saturday.

Long Island Adventure Race

The Long Island Adventure Race is not a typical "Mud Run" or a Running Race. Having a mud pit and simply getting you dirty isn't enough. Our goal is to combine unique obstacles and challenges, along with running or walking in an exciting atmosphere. The race is a well thought out event that can satisfy not only the most seasoned athlete but the weekend warrior as well. Our course is designed so all ages and abilities can have a great time.

You can choose to compete against other individuals, run for fun or just push yourself to do something that you can tell your friends about. Although, no need to tell your friends if they are along side of you.

We also have a unique 3-person team segment. This team competition currently has several groups already talking smack. Who will win the the bragging rights? Will the Cross-Fit groups from the city beat the Long Island groups or will the Planet Fitness group win it all. Only time will tell.

Navy SEAL LT.Michael P. Murphy Run Around The Lake
Jac's Pack will be here
4 Miler in Memory Of Navy Seal Lt. Michael P. Murphy

Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy
United States Navy (SEAL)
May 7, 1976 - June 28, 2005

Lt. Michael P. Murphy, fondly referred to by friends and family as “Murph,” was born May 7, 1976 in Smithtown, N.Y. and grew up in the New York City commuter town of Patchogue, N.Y. on Long Island.

Murphy grew up active in sports and attended Patchogue's Saxton Middle School. In high school, Murphy took a summer lifeguard job at the Brookhaven town beach in Lake Ronkonkoma -- a job he returned to each summer through his college years. Murphy graduated from Patchogue-Medford High School in 1994.

Murphy attended Penn State University, where he was an exceptional all-around athlete and student, excelling at ice hockey and graduating with honors. He was an avid reader; his reading tastes ranged from the Greek historian Herodotus to Tolstoy's "War and Peace." Murphy's favorite book was Steven Pressfield’s “Gates of Fire,” about the Spartan stand at Thermopylae. In 1998, he graduated with a pair of Bachelor of Arts degrees from Penn State -- in political science and psychology.

Following graduation, he was accepted to several law schools, but instead he changed course. Slightly built at 5 feet 10 inches, Murphy decided to attend SEAL mentoring sessions at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point with his sights on becoming a U.S. Navy SEAL. Murphy accepted an appointment to the Navy's Officer Candidate School at Pensacola, Fla., in September, 2000.

Murphy was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy on Dec. 13, 2000, and began Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S) training in Coronado, Calif., in January 2001, graduating with Class 236. BUD/S is a six-month training course and the first step to becoming a Navy SEAL.

Upon graduation from BUD/S, he attended the Army Jump School, SEAL Qualification Training and SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) school. Lt. Murphy earned his SEAL Trident and checked on board SDV Team (SDVT) 1 in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in July of 2002. In October of 2002, he deployed with Foxtrot Platoon to Jordan as the liaison officer for Exercise Early Victor.

Following his tour with SDVT-1, Lt. Murphy was assigned to Special Operations Central Command in Florida and deployed to Qatar in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. After returning from Qatar, Lt. Murphy was deployed to the Horn of Africa, Djibouti, to assist in the operational planning of future SDV missions.

In early 2005, Murphy was assigned to SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team 1 as assistant officer in charge of ALFA Platoon and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On June 28, 2005, Lt. Murphy was the officer-in-charge of a four-man SEAL element in support of Operation Red Wing tasked with finding key anti-coalition militia commander near Asadabad, Afghanistan. Shortly after inserting into the objective area, the SEALs were spotted by three goat herders who were initially detained and then released. It is believed the goat herders immediately reported the SEALs’ presence to Taliban fighters.

A fierce gun battle ensued on the steep face of the mountain between the SEALs and a much larger enemy force. Despite the intensity of the firefight and suffering grave gunshot wounds himself, Murphy is credited with risking his own life to save the lives of his teammates. Murphy, intent on making contact with headquarters, but realizing this would be impossible in the extreme terrain where they were fighting, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own life moved into the open, where he could gain a better position to transmit a call to get help for his men.

Moving away from the protective mountain rocks, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire. This deliberate and heroic act deprived him of cover and made him a target for the enemy. While continuing to be fired upon, Murphy made contact with the SOF Quick Reaction Force at Bagram Air Base and requested assistance. He calmly provided his unit’s location and the size of the enemy force while requesting immediate support for his team. At one point, he was shot in the back causing him to drop the transmitter. Murphy picked it back up, completed the call and continued firing at the enemy who was closing in. Severely wounded, Lt. Murphy returned to his cover position with his men and continued the battle.

As a result of Murphy’s call, an MH-47 Chinook helicopter, with eight additional SEALs and eight Army Night Stalkers aboard, was sent in as part of the QRF to extract the four embattled SEALs. As the Chinook drew nearer to the fight, a rocket-propelled grenade hit the helicopter, causing it to crash and killing all 16 men aboard.

On the ground and nearly out of ammunition, the four SEALs, continued to fight. By the end of a two-hour gunfight that careened through the hills and over cliffs, Murphy, Gunner’s Mate 2nd Class (SEAL) Danny Dietz and Sonar Technician 2nd Class (SEAL) Matthew Axelson had fallen. An estimated 35 Taliban were also dead. The fourth SEAL, Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class (SEAL) Marcus Luttrell, was blasted over a ridge by a rocket-propelled grenade and knocked unconscious. Though severely wounded, the fourth SEAL and sole survivor, Luttrell, was able to evade the enemy for nearly a day; after which local nationals came to his aide, carrying him to a nearby village where they kept him for three more days. Luttrell was rescued by U.S. Forces on July 2, 2005.

By his undaunted courage, intrepid fighting spirit and inspirational devotion to his men in the face of certain death, Lt. Murphy was able to relay the position of his unit, an act that ultimately led to the rescue of Luttrell and the recovery of the remains of the three who were killed in the battle.

Lt. Murphy was buried at Calverton National Cemetery less than 20 miles from his childhood home. Lt. Murphy’s other personal awards include the Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Ribbon and National Defense Service Medal.

Lt. Murphy is survived by his mother Maureen Murphy; his father Dan Murphy; and his brother John Murphy. Dan and Maureen Murphy, who were divorced in 1999, remain close friends and continue to live in N.Y. Their son John, 22, attends the New York Institute of Technology, and upon graduation will pursue a career in criminal justice, having been accepted to the New York City Police Deparment.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a perfect beginner race that includes a pool swim with 50 meter lanes. It is early in the season and a great way to get involved in the sport as well as a good warm up race for veterans.

POOL SWIM-400 Meters
Each athlete will start individually, 5 seconds apart. You will be swimming 8 lengths of 50 meters each. You will "snake" your way through 8 lanes (each lane will be going in only one direction).
No fins, wetsuits or buoys are permitted.

Make sure you know your current 400 meter swim time race morning in order to ensure that you are lined up in the appropriate place to start the race. If you do not know your time, we suggest you time yourself prior to the event. If you are unable to complete 400 Meters in 16 minutes, you should not jeopardize yourself or the event planners by registering to race. Instead, plan to enroll in a swim training program and plan to race after training.

BIKE- 6 Miles: (3) 2 mile loops
The bike course is a park road that will be closed to vehicle traffic for the duration of the event.

Bikes allowed: road bike, time trial, mountain bike or hybrid. (Sorry, no tandem or recumbent bikes!)

RUN-2 Miles: 1 mile out 1 mile back
The run course consists of a out and back run in the park. A water stop will be at mile 1 on the run course.

Ride to Montauk

A Special Note About the 73- and 30-Mile Routes

(If you're NOT doing the 73 or 30 you should stop reading this immediately and skip to the section below where you pick the ride distance you prefer.)

The 73 Mile Route

For years we've offered a 73-mile route where you start pedaling from the Mastic-Shirley train station on Long Island. You either get there on your own, or you take our FREE transport on ride day for your bike and you from Manhattan or Babylon to Mastic-Shirley. (If that makes no sense at all, just PRETEND that I know what I'm talking about...)

For 2014 we'll still offer that great ride, and we'll ALSO have a new 70-mile route that starts in Montauk and ends in Montauk!

This new route features great scenery with the best views of the water. Start in Montauk and head west. Your second rest stop will be in Amagansett -- you're now on the same route as everyone else headed to the Montauk finish line. This route is great for every 70-mile rider, and particularly swell for those who want to stay in Montauk Friday night. Please note that to do this new Montauk-to-Montauk 70-mile route we can NOT transport your bike and you to the Montauk start/finish line to begin the ride -- you need to get there on Saturday morning (ride day) on your own. You CAN take our optional transportation home if you wish -- more on that below.

WARNING -- You can NOT take your bike on the train to Montauk on Friday. It's all-out head-for-the-Hamptons madness on Fridays at this time of year and they'll never let you on with a bike. FYI.

The 30-Mile Route

The place where the 30-mile riders start to pedal is in East Hampton, well, 30-miles away from the Montauk finish line. You are on the same route as everyone else; you just start pedaling closer to the finish line.

The way 99% of the cyclists get to that place where the 30s start to pedal is that they go to the Manhattan, Babylon, or Mastic-Shirley start line on ride day and we transport their bike and them to East Hampton for free.

We occasionally hear from a very few people who live in the area or are staying in Montauk. On ride day they don't want to go all the way to Manhattan, Babylon, or Mastic-Shirley, just so they can turn around and be transported right back to East Hampton! They want to drive themselves to that East Hampton location to pedal the 30.

Sounds OK to us!

BUT...

1. We offer NO transportation from the Montauk finish line back to East Hampton after the ride is over. If you leave your car parked at the 30-mile start in East Hampton you MUST have a way to get back there on your own -- we can't transport you there, and we are not aware of any public transit that goes there.

2. Manhattan, Babylon, and Mastic-Shirley are full-service start lines with all the trimmings -- breakfast, mechanics... . At the 30-mile start we'll have NUTHIN'! (Because most riders enjoyed all the goodies at Manhattan, Babylon, or Mastic-Shirley). One of our crew will be there in East Hampton to hand you your rider I.D. wristbands, and there will be portable toilets, but that's it. Be sure you get fed and fill your water bottles BEFORE you get there.

As long as you understand this, you are welcome to skip Manhattan, Babylon, and Mastic-Shirley and head straight to the 30-mile start. We'll have complete details on WHERE that is in a couple weeks, but it is in East Hampton and there is free parking.

This will be close to 300 meters long depending on the tide.

Peconic River swim with time trial start; water temperature 69-72 degrees.

Know your 1500 meter (1,650 yards in a 25 yard pool, 66 lengths) pool swim time so you can seed yourself at race start. The first swimmer goes off at 6:40 AM. Swim will be a Time Trial start, athletes will seed themselves according to swim times. It is imperative you know your swim time in a pool for 1,500 meters (1,650 yards in a 25 yard pool, 66 lengths).

Time trial start means each athlete will activate their own start time when they are instructed by the timer to cross the timing mat before entering the water. The faster swimmers will seed themselves to go at the beginning of the race entry line and slower swimmers towards the end. We will have signs for swim times from 20 minutes and under, 21 - 25 minutes, 26 to 30 minutes, 31 - 35 minutes and 36 - 40 minutes. The more accurately you know your swim time the better you can seed yourself and have a great swim. There is no part of the course that athletes can stand since it goes down the middle of the river. Down on one side of a line of buoys and back on the other. Make sure you can swim 1500 meters without stopping.

Jac's Pack will be here
COURSE DESCRIPTION

Athletes enjoy this course for its beauty and small town atmosphere. Montauk is a quaint fishing and surfing town on the eastern most tip of Long Island. The town is known for its natural beauty and sports enthusiastic visitors.

Montauk is one of the birth places of triathlon. The sport is growing and athletes want to challenge themselves with longer events. There are few metro area triathlons of this distance. In addition to providing a venue for the athletes, this event will showcase Montauk at a time when the weather is still nice but the summer crowds are not as heavy. This is a great family weekend to spend on the east end with the Olympic and Half Iron distances on Sunday and a Sprint distance race on Saturday.

SWIM - 1.5K
Swim is an out and back in Fort Pond. This is a fresh water swim with temperatures in the mid to upper 60's. Wetsuits are recommended, but not mandatory.

NOTE: The Olympic swim course starts to the left of the swim exit . The two courses are separate and there will be no confusion for the athletes.

BIKE- 40K
The bike course is scenic with rolling hills and beautiful ocean and bay views. It has 1100 feet of total elevation gain.

NOTE: The Olympic bike course is exactly the same as one lap of the Half Iron Distance course with the exception of skipping two out and backs on the return of the loop. These will be marked and staffed.

BIKE SUPPORT

PRE-RACE:

All athletes are responsible for their own bike.
No outside support is allowed as per USAT rules.
There will be limited bike service (assistance fixing flats, and make a pump available) in front of the main tent from 5:00 - 6:00 a.m.

DURING BIKE SEGMENT

There will be two vehicles roving the bike course to assist with any bike problems. Due to the distance of one loop on the bike course being 25 miles, an athlete may have to wait a short or a long time for assistance. Athletes with on-course bike mechanical problems should attempt to get to the nearest staff person to have them contact support to let them know where they are. This is known as "neutral" support and is the only support allowed on the course. Please be aware that NO other support vehicles are allowed on the course. Athletes may NOT provide their own support vehicles (cars, motorcycles, joggers or bikes). Outside assistance jeopardizes the safety of athletes and is grounds for penalty. Please help staff keep the event safe by spreading the word to family, friends and spectators that they should stay at the race site for viewing and cheering and if they wish to workout by running or biking, they should run in town, and/or west on Montauk Highway to ensure they do not interfere with the race. Thank you for your understanding.

.
Bikes allowed: Road bike, time trial, mountain bike or hybrid. (Sorry, no tandem or recumbent bikes!)

RUN - 10K
The run course is a challenging and hilly with 403 feet of total elevation gain.
NOTE: The Olympic run course is exactly the same as one lap of the Half Distance course with omitting one small section that will be well marked and staffed during the race making it simple for the athletes to do the correct course.

RUN FUEL STATIONS (water and full service alternating)
There will be a water stop at every 1.5 mile mark. Every other water stop will be full service with Heed, Coke, water and Heed Gels

The Ride to Montauk

Take a look at the beautiful photos on this web site, all taken along our backroads route. The ride has wonderful scenery, fantastic rest stops, free bike repair, and full S.A.G. (bike rescue) support.

One of the reasons the Ride to Montauk is so popular is that it is one of THE flattest rides in the entire area. New for 2015! We have eliminated the giant hills at the very end of the ride -- yahoo!

We pedal on quiet back roads past mansions, the ocean, farms, windmills, and the most beautiful sections of the Hamptons. Whether you are a beginner or an expert, this is the ride for you!

Start your day in Manhattan, Babylon, or Mastic Shirley and pick the distance that’s right for you -- 30 miles, 73 miles, 108 miles, or 150 miles.

ALL routes end in Montauk, so even if your friends are pedaling a different distance, you can all meet up at a rest stop or at the finish for the post-ride party!

Along the way enjoy our beautiful rest stops in Lynbrook, Babylon, Blue Point, Westhampton Water Mill, and Amagansett. We’ll be there to welcome you with great food, support, and a place to relax.

Get home from Montauk on your own, or sign up for our optional transportation for your bike and you. The first run is at 12:00 p.m. for our super-speedy riders! The last run is at 8:00 p.m., and we’ll make sure you don’t miss the last trip home.

MIghtyMan Olympic Distance Triathlon
Jac's Pack will be here
Athletes enjoy this course for its beauty and small town atmosphere.
